An alkaline diet brings a sense of well-being

In order to stay healthy, it is important to maintain a balanced pH level in the body. Excessive acidity in the body causes loss of energy, sluggishness, accelerates the aging process, and is a fertile ground for the development of cancer cells.

The pH of the body indicates how acidic or alkaline our body is. Excessive acidity in the body indicates acidic waste products, which are a favorable environment for the growth of bacteria. Bacteria and various microbes multiply in an acidic environment, which in turn can lead to illness in the body. Therefore, it is important to keep the pH neutral.

The word pH comes from the Latin phrase “Potentia hydrogenii” – p means potential, possible reserve and H is the symbol for hydrogen. pH refers to the concentration of hydrogen ions in a substance and indicates whether it is a basic or acidic solution and is measured using the pH scale.

At birth, the pH of the blood is more alkaline, and as we age, it becomes more acidic. If the pH of the blood is out of balance (too acidic or alkaline), it affects the metabolic activity of the cells.

Acidic blood has a negative effect on the body’s cells, which are damaged and unable to fight bacteria. Damaged cells carry less oxygen, which means less energy and causes various health problems.

According to Ketlin Jaani-Vihalem, chairwoman of the board of the Estonian Nutrition Consultants Association, people have no idea how important it is to maintain acid-base balance in the body. “Even relatively small fluctuations can lead to various health problems, and finding the root cause can be quite troublesome,” she explained.

“Since our Western diet is already rather unhealthy, it’s no wonder that our pH is often out of whack. The more meat, wheat, rice, sugar, alcohol, coffee, and processed foods we eat, the more acidic we become. That’s why it makes sense to keep the ratio of alkaline and acid-forming foods around 80/20,” Jaani-Vihalem explained.

“It is also important to know that the effect of foods that create an alkaline reaction is several times lower than that of foods that create an acidic residue,” Jaani-Vihalem explained the background to the 80/20 principle. “You certainly can’t go wrong if the menu includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, sprouts and algae, both in terms of pH and simply a healthy balanced diet,” he added.

To cope with fighting bacteria and toxins, the skin needs a slightly alkaline environment. The stomach and other organs responsible for digestion are highly acidic.

While eating alkaline foods can help balance your body’s pH, it’s important to note that this doesn’t happen overnight. Regular, varied alkaline diets, long-term lifestyle changes, adequate exercise, and regular detoxification can help maintain good health.

Today’s diet is increasingly biased towards acidic foods, offering us refined wheat products, sugar-enriched foods, fatty meats and fast food, which means our bodies are too acidic. Although the body can break down a certain amount of acidic foods, too much acidity can be overwhelming. That’s why it’s important to take care of your pH balance.
